Furniture Safety Basics
cribs
Look for this seal. Any crib you buy should be safety certified by the JPMA. Older cribs, second-hand cribs and “family heirlooms” may pose a safety hazard.
bunk beds
• Not recommended for kids under 6 years of age • Top bunk should have guardrails on each side. The side against the wall or opposite the ladder should run the entire length of the bed • Children should not be allowed to climb sides of the bunk bed • One child at a time on the top bunk storage and toy chests • Lids should feature safety latches and hinges • Avoid lids that lock—especially automatic locks • Replace hinges and latches on older chests to meet current safety standards
dressers and chests of drawers
• Drawers should glide smoothly • Check for automatic drawer stops • Use tip restraints for taller dressers
bookcases
• Anchor tall bookcases to floor or wall to prevent tipping • Do not overload top shelves • Store heavy items on bottom shelves • Attach desk or dresser shelf units securely
dressers and chests of drawers
• TVs may tip forward if they are not properly supported. Always use the correct furniture for TVs and other electronics in your child’s room • Bundle and conceal electrical cords behind furniture to keep from small children
